One of the worst nightmares for any driver is having someone break into their vehicle without permission. And this is especially disastrous if the vehicle is transporting high-value goods.
The best way to prevent these unauthorized access attempts is to install a door sensor on your truck. This type of device detects when the truck's doors are opened and, depending on the technology, can even automatically lock the vehicle.
But not all truck door sensors are the same.
Here are the seven features your truck door sensors should have:
Seven features that truck door sensors should have to prevent theft
1. Truck door sensors must detect when doors are opened in unauthorized areas
The truck door sensor must be connected to a monitoring platform where authorized routes and stops for the driver can be programmed, as well as pre-set locations for delivery and/or pickup with the customer.
2. Truck door sensors must be capable of detecting any type of tampering
A security system is only as strong as its weakest link. If a device is easy to tamper with, it doesn’t matter how many functions it has, because disconnecting it would render it completely useless. For this reason, the door-opening sensor must be equipped with anti-tampering technologies that detect any attempt to cut or tamper with the wiring.
3. Truck door sensors must identify each door separately
It is highly likely that the driver is permitted to park and get out of the truck at authorized stops. However, they are not required to open or close the passenger-side door. The door-opening detection system must be able to identify each door separately, assigning specific parameters to each one to ensure greater safety during the trip.
4. A truck door sensor should allow for the adjustment of parameters based on the level of risk
It is well known that certain areas of the country have higher rates of road crime. This should be taken into account when designing a security strategy for your fleet’s door-opening sensors. A good security system allows you to adjust settings based on the location or the level of risk associated with the trip.
5. A truck door sensormust be able to be enabled or disabled remotely
Most door-opening detection systems require a service call to enable or disable their functionality. This is impractical, as there may be times when it is strategically necessary to activate or deactivate the sensor. Fortunately, the most advanced systems allow you to make this change remotely via the platform.
6. A truck door sensorshould still work even without a signal
One of the greatest dangers on the road is the use of jammers by organized crime, which block all types of signals. If the door-opening sensor is linked to a platform’s settings and cannot function properly without a signal, it will most likely fail to work correctly in a dangerous situation. For this reason, it is essential that the door-opening sensor be able to operate independently, even without a signal.
7. A truck door sensorshould automatically trigger locks and alerts
It is not enough for the door-opening detection system to automatically trigger an alert when it detects an anomaly. Break-ins happen in a matter of seconds, so it is vital that the system be able to automatically lock the unit to prevent the intruder from gaining control.
